Some Descendents of Arthur Gary of Roxbury, Massachusetts

A written account of "Gary" "Gerry" name change

I added this to the Gary Line because I was curious as to whether this information might prove useful in the future. Even though these children were born 10 years after Luther, it gives an account of the "Gary" to "Gerry" name change.

According to the information in this Gary Genalogy: The Descendants of Arthur Gary of Roxbury, MA, with an account of the posterity of Stephen Gary", I find in the Fifth Generation:

Seth Gary was born in Taunton, Mass. Aug. 6, 1787.  At the age of nineteen and one-half years he bought his time of his father on April 1, 1807, and on the 23rd of that month set sail from Boston for Passamaquoddy Bay, ME, where he arrived on May 12, 1807.  He settled in the town of Robbinston, ME, and was a shipbuilder.  He married in Robbinston, ME, May 13, 1817, Mary Stetson, born May 11, 1796, daughter of Capt. Caleb and Rebecca (Cummings) Stetson, of Robbinston, and a descendant of Cornet Robert Stetson, an early and prominent settler in Scituate, Mass.  Capt. Caleb Stetson was a noted shipbuilder.  Seth Gary after his settlement in Maine assumed the spelling of "Gerry" and his descendants have used this corruption of the original name.  He died in Robbinston, ME, February 29, 1864, and his widow died there, June 22, 1868.

• Seth Stetson Gerry, born September 1823; married June 30, 1857, Olivia Felt.
• Elbridge J. Gerry, born June 25, 1825.
• Lucy Gerry, born August 7, 1827; married October 1848, John Leland.
• Martha Gerry, born October 8, 1829; married Sept. 26, 1852, George Stoddard.
• Andrew J. Gerry, born Mar. 18, 1832; died Mar. 18, 1832.
• Rachel Gerry, born May 5, 1833; died May 5, 1833
• William P. Gerry, born May 9, 1834; married Nov. 7, 1869, Laura Wilder
• Esther Gerry, born Aug. 2, 1836; married Sept. 27, 1853, Amaziah Nash, Jr.
• Anson Gerry, born October 4, 1839; died Oct. 4, 1839.
• George E. Gerry, born April 12, 1841; drowned September 9, 1858.
