A famous Gerry, Elbridge, Vice-President, some information
It sometimes makes me wonder why so many people insist that they are descended from Elbridge Gerry. Is it because he was vice-president??. One can only guess at their reasoning. However, I have tried to find any information regarding Elbridge's family. I really began to wonder where some of these people get their information. First in one reading I have of him: Elbridge Gerry was one of 12 children born to Thomas and Elizabeth Gerry. Little is known of his youth, from his birth on July 17, 1744, in Marblehead, Mass., to his 1758 entrance to Harvard College. Upon graduation in 1762, he entered his father's prosperous mercantile firm. He joined a Marblehead social group that became increasingly political as Massachusetts felt the impact of Britain's imperial policy. In 1765 Gerry argued publicly that Americans might in conscience evade the new Stamp Act duties. In 1770 he served on the local Committee of Inspection to enforce the boycott of the Townshend Act, and 2 years later he aided Sam Adams in setting up committees of correspondence. With John and Sam Adams, Gerry made up the patriot triumvirate in the Bay Colony. So, in this excerpt, it states he was one of 12 children. Who are the other children? Second reading, I find that when he died, he left his widow, Ann Thompson, three sons and four daughters. Then I find in the Family Search.Org, the listing for Elbridge Gerry, with 3 sons and six daughters?? (I have included that information below, keeping the original links) If anyone can e-mail me with information regarding Elbridge Gerry's siblings and his children, names and dates of birth, it would greatly be appreciated. Any information that is received will be posted on this page.
