IMPORTANT NOTES IN RESEARCHING THESE FAMILIES
What is amazing about the Gary-Gerry-Garey line is that everyone seems to use one name at one time and a different spelling at another. Many of the stories written in the 1800's regarding how towns were started and whos who information, sometimes is inaccurate. For just a note, when reading about a Gary/Gerry they state that he is the son of the first immigrant. Now, when someone really checks this out, even in the story it says that the First Gary was born in 1808 and his "father, the first immigrant", came over here in 1712. Now, I don't believe that this immigrant came here and 100 years later had a son!!! There is also a record of a Morton L. Gary, who in a Historical book of Sherman, Maine states that he started the first home, etc. and that he is from Massachusetts. Well, in looking at the census, first of all his name is Morgan Gerry, and he comes from Maine. So, with all this confusion, it is a wonder that people believe that their ancestors are from here or there. To set the record straight I have posted all the Gerry's, Gary's, McGerry's, McGary's, Garey's and McGarey's that were listed on all the census from 1790, 1800, and 1810. Even from this list, you will note that in one Census the persons name is Gary, the next Gerry, maybe Garey. So, you be the judge. Please note when researching this family, as we have all noted, they tend to switch their names from one or another. Sometimes the Census takers spell their names wrong, and sometimes, names can be misspelled in the books, historical literature, and other information that we receive our information from. Please make sure when you are on a website and wish to locate a particular person, use all the different spellings or the soundex when researching.
